GOLDEN EAGLE (Finland)
Aquila chrysaetos
This was my second attempt at capturing images of the golden eagle in snow (my previous attempt to Norway was thwarted by rain). This was also my first trip to Finland – I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to photograph these dramatic encounters with the powerful and majestic Golden Eagle. It is not for the faint-hearted – a day in the hide can last up to 12 hours and, while the hide was heated, it was still -30 degrees outside. The short winter days mean that the Eagles are keen to visit daily to take advantage of the Arctic Hare (road kill) bait.
